The Use of Virtual Reality in Education

In the recent past, 3D virtual reality has seen its applications across a wide range of industries, from entertainment to tourism to military training, etc. and it doesn’t seem to be stopping just there.  The education sector is primed to make use of the technology in an attempt to take their services to new levels. It’s a well-established fact that people learn best through experiences. However, an analysis of modern education will reveal that it’s based entirely on instructions and retention instead of experiences and practice.

An in-depth study by the researchers at the University of Maryland backs this fact. The study reported 8.8 percent improvements in the recall ability of the students when given experience based lectures using virtual reality headsets. Not only does virtual reality based education boost recall, but it also promotes empathy, which will help students develop a better understanding of events and people that they have no other ways to experience or connect with.

VR (Virtual Reality) will provide that essential element of experience to education. The technology has the potential to change how learning is perceived as an activity and how it is carried out. It is already being incorporated in learning activities across a number of areas.

Anatomy

In Taiwan, Taipei Medical University collaborated with the Tech giant HTC to build the largest VR based anatomy classroom in the world. There are 10 sets of VIVE PROs installed across the room along with 3D Organ on VR anatomy software. The classroom allows individual study along with cooperative use of the same VR surrounding to provide a thorough learning experience. Students can gain an in-depth understanding of human anatomy and a comprehensive understanding of how several body parts function. Furthermore, it can bypass the limitations associated with traditional learning in this field such as those of awkward angles and unobservable structures.

Natural Disasters

Virtual reality is being employed in classroom education to help children develop empathy with natural disaster victims. Since school children have limited exposure and life experiences, they cannot exactly understand what a natural disaster victim has gone through. The Classer uses a standalone VR enabled headset, a student-friendly interface, and 360-degree videos to help children perceive what happens when a natural disaster occurs. The immersive experience hence created, allows the children to comprehend the magnitude of such life-changing events and calamities. As a result, the children go on to develop much-needed empathy with the victims of natural disasters.

History

Not many students get the chance to travel to historical sites around the world to get a better understanding of world history. Virtual reality adds that vital experiential dimension to education. Not only can it transport the classroom students to historical sites that witnessed history, but it can also take them back in time to enhance their engagement and understanding of historical characters and events. This makes virtual reality an invaluable resource for educational purposes.

All in all, there are a number of applications of virtual reality technology across the educational spectrum. Its use in the study of history, natural disasters and anatomy are just some of the various such applications.  If your business wants to benefit from this useful tool anywhere along the value chain, xyz creative group provides impeccable services in the field.
